Book Wars

Walmart.com and Amazon.com have been in a head-to-head battle over book prices for quite some time now. Target has now joined in on the battle overcoming both Walmart and Amazon. Starting on Monday, Target began offering six different books that are soon to be published at a low price of $8.99 on their  store website. Walmart had already made the same soon to be published books $8.99 on Friday.

Originally Walmart had the books for $10 then dropped the price to $9 once they saw that Amazon had matched their $10 price. Soon enough Amazon also dropped their price to $9, and Target, new to the book war, dropped their price by a penny to $8.99.

The books being offered at $8.99 are as follows: Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue”; “Under the Dome” by Stephen King; “I, Alex Cross” by James Patterson; “Pirate Latitudes” by Michael Crichton; “The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver; and “Ford County,” a short-story collection by John Grisham.

The book wars can be potentially for bookstores because people will want to buy books at the cheapest price possible. Authors have asked for readers to take into consideration how much they value local bookstores. If people keep buying their books at the cheap prices Walmart, Target, and Amazon are offering, bookstores will be highly affected in their sales and could possibly go out of business.

I feel bad for local bookstores here in Jacksonville. With the economy the way it is, it's no surprise that people will want to buy their books at a low price. I am guilty for buying books from Target because they are cheaper. When Twilight got really popular, I bought almost all of the books at Target because they were significantly cheaper than Books-A-Million. I think that it will be beneficial for local bookstores to come up with some sort of incentive for their buyers to stick with them and not go somewhere that is asking for less money.

Michael Jackson sharing with Paul Anka

As you all probably have heard, the recently deceased Michael Jackson has released a new single by the name of "This is It". People all over the world were told that "This is It" was simply a recording left behind by Jackson that noone had heard before. People were also informed that "This is It" was written and performed by Jackson only, however its been recently proven that, that is not true.

"This is It" was indeed written by Michael Jackson, but Paul Anka helped co-write the song as well about 26 years ago. "This is It" was also recorded and performed by the singer Safire under a diferent title known as "I Never Heard" back in 1991.

Yesterday afternoon, Paul Anka's contribution to "This is It" was acknowledged by the Jackson estate. The Jackson estate also claimed earlier today, that Anka would be given half of all due royalties for the song. Being given half of all profits made could very well be huge for Anka.

"This is It" is expected to be played during the credits at the end of the film "This is It" along with being featured on the film's soundtrack. Any licensed uses of the song on commercials or other films will also benefit Anka's profits. It's also been said that Coca-Cola has spoken to the Jackson estate about possibly using "This is It" in a huge ad campaign which could also be significant for Anka.

I think this is a huge opportunity for Paul Anka. As popular as I'm sure the song as well as the movie "This is It" will be, Anka will be receiving quite a large sum. I'm glad that the Jackson estate is giving Anka credit for the part that he played in the writing and recording of Jackson's possible las single, and I know this will work out greatly in his favor.

China wants Michael Jackson

For those of you who are not aware, a Michael Jackson documentary by the name of "This is It" has been made in his memory. The film consists of footage from the concert tour that Jackson was rehearsing before he died back in June.

The film has already gotten so popular that many of the preview screenings are already sold out.

The Associated Press has been informed by Sony Pictures that the Chinese government has approved for "This is It" to be shown in China later on this month. The world wide release for "This is It" is scheduled for October 28, 2009.

This is a huge thing for China because they only allow 20 foreign films to be shown in their country per year.  The most popular American film shown in China was "Titanic" until "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" broke the box office record.

Plans are being made to release many copies of "This is It" all over the world. Michae Jackson was well known all over, and I believe this is going to be a huge hit for him even though he is no longer with us.
